Álvaro Odriozola, looking for a way out of Real Madrid

2 min read

One of the most promising right-backs in world football, Alvaro Odriozola has never managed to find consistency and playing time at Real Madrid. And considering the current state of affairs in the club led by manager Zinedine Zidane, there are very strong rumors that the Spaniard is seeking a new club.

When Real Madrid signed right-back Álvaro Odriozola from Real Sociedad back in 2018, the reasoning behind it seemed quite clear: to provide a reliable backup to Dani Carvajal and to have someone who could eventually replace him. And, while there was a good logic in that reasoning, reality has proven to be quite different.

Alvaro Odriozola has never managed to get consistent playing time at Real Madrid and has not been required a lot in the team, with Dani Carvajal recovering the form that made him one of the best full-backs in the game. And at 25 years old, the former Real Sociedad player, Odriozola, is still young enough to demand regular playing time. This is why there have been reports of Odriozola wanting out of Real Madrid and while we still don’t know if there is a chance of that happening in January, it is very likely that we see him leaving the Spanish capital because he is not bound to have the consistency he craves in this club.

A loan deal doesn’t look likely, either: last season he was loaned to Bayern Munich and while he won the treble with the German giants, he had a very small contribution in this massive achievement. It was certainly a good experience for Alvaro Odriozola in the grand scheme of things in his career, but hardly the leap of quality he needed in terms of minutes played. Perhaps not as highly-regarded as he was back in his Real Sociedad days, there’s still a lot of time for Odriozola to get his career back on track and leaving Real Madrid might be the best decision, considering how things are going for him right now in that club.
