This year was one of the most terrible years in the history of mankind, with a hell of causalities all around the globe due to Covid-19 pandemic. The disease did not spare the sports industry including the UFC which was forced to cancel several MMA events due to the world-wide restrictions. However, it was only thanks to the resourcefulness and determination of Dana White who did a masterpiece moving the fights to UFC Fight Island in the United Arab Emirates. Despite no fan-attendance was allowed, we could still enjoy the show for a large part of 2020 when several other sports were “closed”.
So before making an extensive article recapping the 2020 which will be published over the next days, let’s quickly have a look at the main events of UFC during this ending year. A lot of great fights have happened during this year where we witnessed several scary knockouts, powerful submissions, and dominating decisions. Our team is already working on new videos with the best highlights of the year in the UFC and they will be published on our newly established DeeperSport youtube channel.
We had a mix of feelings during this year. The saddest news is the retirement of the (arguably) greatest fighter ever, Khabib Nurmagomedov (29-0-0). Unfortunately, it was not the only retirement since also Daniel Cormier (22-3-1 NC), former heavyweight world champion, decided to hang gloves. Another negative feeling is related to Tony Ferguson (25-5-0) losing two matches in a row which may be traumatizing for the much beloved UFC fighter. On the contrary, we had much more positive news such as the “explosion” of the sensational Khamzat Chimeav (9-0-0) who won 2 fights in just 10 days and the confirmation of the new UFC superstar, Israel Adesanya. What a fighter! Recently, Adesanya announced that he is willing to go one category up creating potentially awesome matchups in the light heavyweight division. In addition, several other fighters have shown great skills and they may be ready for an explosive 2021: above all Francis Ngannou (15-3-0) and Charles Oliveira (29-8-0, 1 NC).

In our opinion, amongst the best fights of the year, the recent Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Brandon Moreno deserved a special mention. Figuereido (20-1-0) and Moreno (18-5-1) spent their 25 minutes in one of the most intense and cruel UFC battle, which according to several commentators, could be considered one of the best MMA fights ever. Other great fights of 2020 are: Zhang vs. Jędrzejczyk, Ferguson vs. Gaethje, Poirier vs. Hooker.
