Canelo Alvarez clarifies his status of free agent

“Canelo” Alvarez said he was willing to work with all the promotion companies and TV broadcasters to secure the best opponents available in the division. Last month, Canelo reached an agreement with Golden Boy Promotions to rescind the contract between him and the promotion company founded by Oscar De La Hoya after several years of collaboration.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) will return to the ring next 19 December, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, to challenge the reigning world champion for the super-middleweight “Super” WBA belt and “The Ring” super-middleweight title, Callum “Mundo” Smith (27-0, 19 KOs). You can read our prediction here. The British boxer is involved in his third defense of the titles. The event will be streamed live on DAZN. In his last appearance on the square, dated 2 November 2019, Alvarez won the WBO title of the light heavyweight by knocking out Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev in the eleventh round. Afterwards, Canelo Alvarez preferred to vacate the belt revealing the intention to keep fighting in the super middleweight category.
However, in the recent month or so, Canelo Alvarez has been involved in a couple of disputes in relation to his contracts with the Golden Boy Promotion and DAZN. The Mexican super-champion was not happy about the services provided by the two companies since, according to Canelo Alvarez, they could not organize the number of fights expected by the Mexican superstar. As a result, Canelo Alvarez has decided to terminate the working relationships with those two entities. It seems that with the Golden Boy Promotions an agreement has been reached while with DAZN the parties involved are still trying to achieve an amicable solution.
In any event, the 30-year-old Mexican is a free agent, and he has decided to work exclusively with his coach and co-manager Eddy Reynoso. So, this uncertain situation has created some concerns among Alvarez’s fans afraid of not seeing him on major TV networks or against strong opponents usually promoted by powerful companies. In the recent weeks, several speculators have mentioned that Canelo Alvarez could experience boycott from the boxing world after his choice of walking alone. Being arguably the strongest boxer (hard to say since Terence Crawford is still around) in activity and a hugely popular sportsman, Canelo Alvarez has decided to speak up addressing those concerns affecting his fans.
In a recent interview, the Mexican boxer has stated that he is willing to work with other promotion companies in order to secure matches against top-level opponents. Alvarez added that his aim is not to become a promoter for the time being despite in the future this opportunity may not be excluded. However, right now, Canelo Alvarez has confirmed to be willing to fight all the possible guys to show that he is the best. Furthermore, Canelo stated that he has no intention to retire any time soon”.
Along the same line is his co-manager, Eddy Reynoso, who said he is ready to work with Premier Boxing Champions, Matchroom Boxing and Top Rank to offer the best fights possible over the next years to Canelo Alvarez. After naming one by one the main promoters, Reynoso confirmed that he is available to meet up with Eddie Hearn, Al Haymon and Bob Arum to arrange further bouts.
We feel to share the view of those who confirm that Canelo Alvarez will not have any trouble in arranging fights against other top promotions’ fighters. After all, promoters and TV broadcasters see boxing as a business and money-machine. In addition, the ability of attracting sponsors and crowd of Canelo Alvarez is second to nobody right now and, together with his attitude of picking up always the best challengers, we bet will assist to a wonderful 2021 under the star of Canelo Alvarez.
