The long-awaited return to the ring of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez against the British super-middleweight champion Callum Smith is enriched with an extra prize. The WBC has decided that the fight between the Mexican and the British shall also be for the super middleweight belt in addition to the WBA “super” title already held by Callum Smith. This was announced a couple of days ago by both Matchroom Boxing and Canelo Promotions.
Eddie Hearn, the promoter of Callum Smith and boss of the Matchroom Boxing, has announced that the WBC has agreed to put up for grabs the super middleweight belt for the winner of the bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) and Callum “Mundo” Smith (27-0, 19 KOs). The fight which shall be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio next 19 December was already valid for the Super WBA belt of the super middleweight division. According to Eddie Hearn, the decision of the WBC is correct because the two boxers are the best in the world in the category and the WBC super-middleweight belt was vacant.
In addition, both boxers have already worn a WBC belt before. Canelo Alvarez held the title first in the super welter category from 2011 to 2013 and then in the middleweight category from 2015 to 2016, in 2018 and 2019, until the WBC, one of the main world boxing organization based in Mexico City, awarded him the special “Franchise Champion” status. Callum Smith has the honor of wearing a “Diamond” WBC belt from 2017 to 2019 in the super middle weight division.
The WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman commented echoing the words of Eddie Hearn and confirming that the winner of the bout between Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith fully deserves this belt. Sulaiman continued thanking Avni Yildirim (21-2, 12 KOs) for his exemplary cooperation in making this happen. It is worth remembering that this summer the Turkish boxer, Avni Yildirim, number two in the WBC super-middleweight ranking, was named co-successor to the title along with Canelo Alvarez. This decision came since David Benavidez (23-0, 20 KOs), who held the belt until last year, was stripped of the belt after failing a drug test.
So Avni Yildirim was the official mandatory challenger for the vacant belt. Now he will have to wait for 2021 when most likely, he will have a chance of fighting against the winner of Canelo Alvarez vs Callum Smith. According to WBC rules, the winner of the bout will then have ninety days to fulfil his defense obligation against him.
