After the win against Daniel Dubois (15-1, 14KOs), Joe “Juggernaut” Joyce (12-0, 11KOs) is a step closer for a potential world title shot especially if Anthony Joshua (23-1, 21 KOs) surrendered his WBO belt and Oleksandr Usyk (18-0, 13KOs) were interested in a rematch against the British. This combination of events would immediately represent for Joe Joyce a chance to fight for the WBO heavyweight world title.
The convincing performance of last Saturday in the United Kingdom and concurrent victory against Daniel Dubois are about to change the life of Joe Joyce. In fact, the British heavyweight may soon face Oleksandr Usyk for the WBO heavyweight world title if few events develop as expected.
First of all, the current WBO champion in the heavyweight division is Anthony Joshua who will fight against Kubrat Pulev (28-1, 14 KOs) on December 12. Unfortunately, we do not see Anthony Joshua so favorite as many other commentators are saying since Pulev can be vicious in close combat fight. So, do not take a victory of AJ as granted because from this fight we could get a shocking outcome.
In any event, 2021, most likely, will be the year of the big fight between the two British super-champions, Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury (30-0-1, 21KOs). My personal feelings are that the Gypsy King will still fight AJ regardless of the outcome of the fight against Kubrat Pulev and an eventual rematch. It looks to me more of a territorial fight than a belt fight. So, whatever happens on December 12, the scenarios are: AJ loses the belt on the ring to Pulev or surrender it afterwards to fight Tyson Fury or he will be strip off by the WBO for not fighting Usyk.
In the first case, we will have automatically Pulev vs Usyk within 4-6 months. No doubt about it. In the second and third scenario, Usyk will negotiate with WBO to arrange a title fight to assign the vacant belt, and, in this case, Joe Joyce may pop up. Joe Joyce, who is expected to substantially climb the ranking in the WBO this week, has already history against Usyk and a fight between Usyk and Joyce would be a fantastic rematch.
The two boxers had fought each other in 2013, during the World Series of Boxing match between the British Lionhearts and the Ukrainian Ukraine Otamans. On that occasion Usyk, fresh winner of the Olympic title, won the points with a unanimous verdict of 50-45. And, of course, Joyce is looking forward from having a chance to revenge that defeat.
In the aftermaths of the fight against Dubois, Joyce warned Usyk about a possible confrontation between the two heavyweight boxers, claiming that his boxing skills had grown considerably compared to when they fought in the World Series of Boxing. Joe Joyce continued saying that Usyk is a rather small heavyweight and it will be the perfect opportunity to win a world title. Finally, he compared himself with Derek Chisora (the last boxer who locked horn with Usyk) saying that he has much better legwork of Chisora and he is, overall, a better fighter.
At this point who knows. There is a chain of events which need to develop in favor of Joe Joyce for him to have a title shot. With a bit of luck and determination, everything is still possible.
