John McGinn, the spine of Aston Villa

2 min read

Aston Villa have been enjoying quite a successful first months of this season of the English Premier League and Scottish midfielder John McGinn has been one of their biggest highlights. And, at the same time, he is turning into one of the league’s most underrated midfielders.

Even though Jack Grealish is Aston Villa’s best player for quite a large margin and has been getting most of the recognition, John McGinn’s work cannot be forgotten. The Scottish midfielder came to Villa Park in 2018 and helped them to win promotion to the Premier League in 2019, being a key cog in Dean Smith’s team, always providing cover, good passing and moving all across the pitch.

And while his efforts might have been ignored last season due to Aston Villa fighting relegation, this year the team looks a lot better with the new signings and John McGinn’s partnership with the Brazilian Douglas Luiz has definitely being one of the highlights of their season. This was certainly shown during McGinn’s display against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last Monday, where Aston Villa got a valuable point in a 1-1 draw.

John McGinn was all over the pitch, constantly challenging Chelsea’s midfielders and also showing his on-the-ball skills, proving that he is much more than just a good tackler, which is a big misconception that most people have about him. As I have said before, Grealish gets a lot of well-deserved recognition for his performances, but it’s the likes of Jonh McGinn and Douglas Luiz who give him the freedom and safety to do what Grealish can do best while these two do the dirty work, which is actually quite underrated.

It’s still a bit early to determine where Aston Villa are going to end on the Premier League table this season, but it’s safe to say that they are not going to fight for relegation. And given the John McGinn’s outstanding performances, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him as a target of big teams next summer.
