While everyone who loves combat sports was giving their tribute to Khabib Nurmagomedov, after he recently announced his retirement, often describing Khabib Nurmagomedov as one of the most dominant fighters in all of MMA, there is one fellow who chose to do something very different, Jon Jones.
Yes, you may have guessed that that would be Jon Jones, a fighter that is as dominant in his division, as he is opinionated on many matters. Jon Jones put out a video on his Instagram profile on October 26th, 2020 addressing Khabib’s fans, and likely his fans and MMA fans broadly. In a calm and fairly relaxed tone, Jon Jones basically compared his record of 15 world championship wins, versus the 4 ones of Khabib Nurmagomedov.
It’s clear that Jon Jones does not believe that Khabib Nurmagomedov is the GOAT, and he didn’t waste any time to let the whole world know. Jon Jones added that he is still active and in his early 30s, so he could improve that 15 number even more, whereas Khabib Nurmagomedov is retired. Jon Jones also added that Khabib Nurmagomedov has not been fighting for that long and has not faced the same level and quality of opponents that Jon Jones has faced.
In an effort to reinforce the point that he is the GOAT, Jon Jones said that the only MMA fighter that could challenge his record would be GSP, yes, our friend Georges St. Pierre, who would still need to win 2 title fights if he were to come out of retirement to just match Jon Jones’ current record…
Jon Jones provocatively asked if Khabib Nurmagomedov’s fans were joking when they claim he is the best fighter ever. Now, we hear you Jon Jones, but C’mon Man. Did you really need to put that video out now? Let Khabib Nurmagomedov enjoy his first few days of retirement…. Too bad the weight classes are too different – we would have loved to see Khabib Nurmagomedov come off retirement to make it a 15-4, but that won’t happen and both fighters deserve great respect for what they have accomplished.
