We anticipated few weeks ago that the lightweight category is about to be the hottest division given the number of top-notch boxers in it. Now, also Leonard Ellerbe has joined the discussion on who the best is between Teofimo Lopez (16-0, 12KOs) and Gervonta Davis (24-0, 23 KOs).

We should not be impressed by Leonard Ellerbe’s statements since he is not only the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, and so the manager of Gervonta Davis, but he is also a smart businessman who knows how to market very well his clients. Ask Floyd if you do not believe me…

However, during an interview with Fight Hype, Ellerbe gave his opinion on the growing dualism between the 23-year-old Teofimo Lopez, absolute dominator of the lightweight division, and the 26-year-old Gervonta Davis, regular and super featherweight WBA champion, potentially one of the greatest fights in 2021, if it happens. Ellerbe mentioned that Teofimo Lopez has been boosted too early by the press. And this happened not because Lopez is not a good fight, according to Leonard Ellerbe, but because Vasyl Lomachenko (14-2, 10KOs) is a lousy boxer at the lightweight category.

Ellerbe said that Lomachenko is a featherweight boxer and there it is where he belongs. Teofimo Lopez did not do anything impressive beating Lomachenko in a lightweight bout; on the contrary, the wins of Gervonta Davis against Gamboa (30-4, 18 KOs) and Santa Cruz showed how skillful Gervonta really is. Ellerbe continued said that Gervonta Davis will easily win against Teofimo Lopez.

Finally, Ellerbe made another interesting remark about his friend, Floyd Mayweather. The manager said that comparing Floyd Mayweather to Vasyl Lomachenko was an insult to the boxing fans. Despite I do not personally feel insulted, this time I must agree with Leonard Ellerbe. Floyd, arguably the greatest boxer, was something different from anybody else!
