Lewis Hamilton has mentioned that he is considering ending Formula One at the end of this 2020 season. After winning the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix last Sunday, Lewis Hamilton is a step closer from winning his Formula One seventh World Championship.
The news about Lewis Hamilton quitting commenced circulating from an indirect question asked to the World Champion about the Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff. As you may know, Wolff is considering to become the new CEO of Mercedes taking a step away from the tracks. In this regard, Lewis Hamilton responded: ‘I don’t even know if I am going to be here next year so it is not really a concern for me at the moment. We have a lot of deep conversations, Toto and I, and I know where he is mentally. We carry a lot of the weight together”.
Hamilton continued, “I have been here a long, long time and I can understand him wanting to pull back a little bit and give more time to his family. I don’t know who will replace him but he is a leader and he wouldn’t put anyone in his place who is not able to do the job. He will find the right person”.
Currently, Lewis Hamilton is renegotiating his contract with Mercedes for few more seasons. So it is unclear whether his statements are purely a strategic move in view of his negotiation or if he had taken a different decision. Lewis Hamilton added in the end, “I would like to be here next year but there is no guarantee of that. There is a lot that excites me about F1’s afterlife, so time will tell”.
It is definitely hard to tell where his thoughts are currently and whether a change of role of Toto Wolff may affect the decision about his future. As he said, time will tell.
