Moussa Dembele, Atletico-bound?

2 min read

One of the most important players in Ligue 1 in recent years, Moussa Dembele seems to be on his way out and finding his great shot at a big team in Atletico de Madrid. After the departure of striker Diego Costa, manager Diego “El Cholo” Simeone is eager to bolster his forwards line and the Frenchman seems to be the man to do it.

When it was announced that Diego Costa was going to get his contract terminated with Atletico de Madrid, it was bound to happen that Simeone was going to find a striker to replace the Hispanic-Brazilian and he seems to have done just that with Lyon’s striker, Moussa Dembele.

Despite having just one goal so far this season with the French giants, Moussa Dembele is still highly regarded as one of the best strikers in Ligue 1 in recent years. Since joining Lyon from Celtic Glasgow in 2018, the former Fulham man has scored 45 goals in 105 games, proving to be a reliable goalscorer.

He has also enjoyed a lot of success in key games, such as his appearance as a sub against Manchester City last season in the UEFA Champions League and scoring two goals to give Rudi Garcia’s team a 3-1 victory over the English juggernaut.

So Simeone is getting a player who is proven at a considerable level and who is probably not going to be bothered at being Luis Suarez’s backup, which is something Atletico needs because the Uruguayan cannot play that many games due to his age and he needs the occasional rest here and there, which is where Dembele is going to be very useful.

We have to wait and see if this deal is going to be done, but it is a transfer move that can be quite good for all parties involved and Lyon’s director of football, Juninho, has already stated that there is no sense in keeping a player with no motivation of being at the club.
