Despite Bayern Munich maintaining the great level that made them win the treble last season, the same can’t be said about winger Serge Gnabry, who has struggled to contribute as much as he did last season. Is this something to worry about? Not necessarily.
Bayern Munich winning the treble last season was always going to be a massive achievement and rightfully so: the German side proved to be the strongest team in the world and completely dominated in every single competition they played in, with a lot of players delivering some of the best football of their entire careers.
One particular case was winger Serge Gnabry. After a torrid time in England, the former Arsenal man reached his best level and became one of Bayern’s star performers, especially getting the spotlight when he scored four goals against Tottenham Hotspurs in the last edition of the UEFA Champions League. However, this season has proven to be quite negative for Gnabry, at least in terms of goal contributions. Compared to the last one, Serge Gnabry has lost a bit of pace when we consider that he has only four goal contributions so far this season and he has spent 580 minutes without scoring, which is a new personal negative record for him.
Now, this is not to say that the German international has been bad for Bayern this year. Despite not scoring a lot, he is still influential with his pace, his energy and his skill. Gnabry remains a key cog in Flick’s team and considering his age, he is bound to get back on form, especially taking into account how many chances Bayern creates on a regular basis. Considering all these things, it is just a matter of time before Serge Gnabry goes back to his best. But it is interesting to see a team in such great form and having a key player under-performing, which is something that you don’t see every day.
