Yankees signed Socrates Brito to a minor league contract

2 min read

The New York Yankees surpassed 100 wins in both 2018 and 2019, but failed to reach the World Series. Despite finishing fourth in the league in runs scored in 2020, the Yankees finished 33-27 and got knocked out in the ALDS. Looking to add insurance to an injury-ridden outfield, the Yankees signed Socrates Brito to a minor league contract.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the 28-year-old Socrates Brito will be invited to Major League Spring Training. Brito signed with the Pirates last year and was on the 60-man player pool before opting out for the remainder of the season in September.

What does socrates Brito bring to the table? He’s spent the majority of his professional career in the minor leagues. He hit a career high 17 minor league home runs with a .318 batting average in 2018 and had a .297 batting average with an .836 OPS in 1541 plate appearances at Triple-A.

However, Brito has failed to produce in his small amount of time in the major leagues with the exception of his .303 average in 18 games with the Diamondbacks in 2015.  In his other three stints in the majors in 2016, 2018, and 2019, Brito posted a dreadful .155 batting average in 174 at-bats with 49 strikeouts.

Taking a look at the New York Yankees outfield depth chart, they have Clint Frazier, Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks, Giancarlo Stanton, and Mike Tauchman. Frazier hit .267 with eight home runs last season. Judge hit .257 with nine home runs in 28 games. Hicks struggled to a .225 average with six home runs. Stanton has been limited to 41 games over the past two seasons, and Tauchman hit .243 with no home runs in 43 games.

There is plenty of talent on the Yankees’ roster in the outfield and Socrates Brito has yet to prove himself at the major league level. It appears the only way he appears in a major league uniform is if someone gets injured. Even then, he’s likely the last man on the outfield depth chart and plays sparingly.
